The Pilgrims came ashore at Plymouth in December 1620, after a long crossing aboard the Mayflower that had left many of them sick and exhausted. This picture imagines that arrival, a scene of colonists stepping onto a rocky New England shore that later generations would turn into a national origin story. Its composition, with the figures crowding the foreground and the ship behind them, reflects how nineteenth-century artists liked to frame the founding as a moment of resolve. Look closely at the way the group is arranged, since much of the image's meaning comes from who is placed at the center.
