Provincetown in 1920 was a harbor town at the tip of Cape Cod, where the fishing fleet still set the pace of life on the waterfront. Crews of Portuguese and Yankee descent hauled their catch across the town's wharves, and the dories, schooners and gear sheds packed into the harbor front reflected a trade that had changed little for generations. Winter was a hard season, with boats kept in port and families depending on what the spring fishing could bring. Visitors who came for the summer boarding houses and the sand dunes were a growing part of the local income, but for most residents the harbor's daily work mattered far more than the season's guests.
