Provincetown in 1920 was a fishing port at the tip of Cape Cod that was also becoming known as an art colony. Painters had gathered there since the Cape Cod School of Art, which Charles Hawthorne ran in town from 1899, and the Provincetown Players had been staging new plays since 1915, with Eugene O'Neill's early one-acts among them. Fishing still anchored the local economy, with Portuguese and Yankee crews working the wharves, though the boats were smaller and the catch less reliable than in the town's earlier decades. The national ban on alcohol had taken effect that January, and the seaside town's shifting mix of fishermen, artists and summer visitors made it an unusual place for the decade's new laws to meet local habit.
