Few landing scenes are tied so closely to one spot as this one, which takes its title from the boulder at Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Pilgrims are traditionally said to have first come ashore, dated here to December 11, 1620, by the old calendar. The lithograph was issued by Sarony & Major, a New York firm that produced many hand-colored historical scenes for the popular market in the 1840s. By then Plymouth Rock had become a national emblem of American origins, though the story of the landing rests largely on later tradition rather than contemporary accounts. The hand coloring gives the scene the look of a commemorative keepsake.
