Unlike the sober paintings of the Mayflower colonists that hang in many schools, this 1909 postcard is a holiday greeting, its pilgrims and turkey drawn for a sender to mail to a friend or relative. Such cards were a popular form of mass-produced ephemera in the early twentieth century, when postal rates were low and holiday imagery was printed in bright colors. The card reflects how Thanksgiving had by then become a settled national custom, with the 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth recast as a symbol of gratitude and family togetherness. Its cheerful cartoon style shows how the story was being softened for home and hearth.
