Leading figure here is Massasoit, the Wampanoag sachem, shown on his way to meet the Pilgrims at Plymouth to conclude a peace treaty in 1621. The pairing of the Wampanoag leader with the newcomers is what sets this picture apart from the many scenes of the Mayflower landing on the same board. The agreement he reached that year with Plymouth's governor, John Carver, was a mutual defense pact that held for more than 50 years, one of the longest periods of peace between colonists and Native nations in New England. Pictures like this were often painted or printed long after the events, so they reflect later ideas about the colonial past as much as the moment itself.
