Engraved as a vignette for a bank note, this proof shows the Pilgrims coming ashore at Plymouth in 1620, a scene that had become a familiar part of American national memory by the 1850s. The plate was made by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. of New York, a firm that supplied detailed pictorial engraving for banknotes, since intricate images were harder to counterfeit than plain lettering. The bracketed date in the record means 1856 is an estimate. Viewers of the period would likely have read the orderly landing as a symbol of courage, faith and the founding of a new country.
