Here the scene is the departure from Delfshaven in the Netherlands, where a group of English separatists gathered on the quay in 1620 to leave for America. The composition follows Robert Walter Weir's large painting of the subject, completed in the 1840s and installed in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, where it became one of the best-known images of the Pilgrims. Engravings like this one carried the scene into schoolbooks and parlors across the country, shaping how many Americans pictured their founding story. Look for the minister near the center, shown in prayer as the emigrants say their farewells.
