Painted rather than photographed, this view shows Plymouth as W.L. Williams pictured it for the year 1622, about two years after the Mayflower landing. The colonists were then still building modest houses of timber and thatch, and the settlement was guarded by a palisade and a small fort on the hill above the harbor. A.S. Burbank of Plymouth reproduced the painting as a color picture postcard around 1901, part of a wave of souvenir cards that drew on the town's Pilgrim heritage. The card is worth noticing both for the reconstructed dwellings it shows and for what it reveals about how early Plymouth was packaged for visitors.
