Outdoor scenes like this one usually depict the autumn gathering at Plymouth in 1621, when colonists and Wampanoag people shared food over several days after a difficult first year. The picture itself is a later creation, shaped by nineteenth-century tastes for a tidy origin story, and it presents the meal as a calm, evenly balanced occasion that the surviving accounts do not fully support. Such images helped shape the Thanksgiving holiday, which Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of observance in 1863.
