Plymouth Rock gives this scene its name, but the link between the rock and the landing is a tradition that was not recorded until long after the fact. The Mayflower's passengers reached the coast in late 1620, first anchored off Provincetown, and then settled across the bay at Plymouth. The rock's association with the landing dates to 1741, when a local man said his father had pointed it out as the spot where the colonists came ashore. Pictures like this one, made generations later, reveal as much about how Americans chose to remember the Pilgrims as about the harsh first winter the settlers actually endured.
