Few images of the Pilgrims show the moment of leaving as clearly as this engraving, which places the travelers on a crowded ship deck as they set out. It reproduces the composition of Robert Walter Weir's painting of the same name, completed in 1843 and now hung in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington. Weir's scene depicts the Pilgrims' departure from Delfshaven in the Netherlands in 1620, where the congregation's pastor, John Robinson, offered a farewell prayer before they sailed. Engravings like this one carried the scene into schoolbooks and parlors across the country, shaping how many Americans pictured the origins of New England.
