Larry Gardner, the Boston American League third baseman, is the subject of this 1912 glass negative. That was the season the Red Sox won the pennant and then the World Series over the New York Giants, and Boston's success drew steady attention from newspaper photographers. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose Bain News Service supplied news and sports pictures to newspapers in that era. Glass negatives like this one recorded fine detail, which made them useful for reproduction in print.
