Tris Speaker, the Boston American League center fielder known for his quick reads on fly balls, is the subject of this 1912 glass negative. It comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose negatives document sports and news figures in the early twentieth century. Researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research dated the picture to 1912, the year Boston won the World Series with Speaker as a key part of its outfield.
