The catcher Les Nunamaker is the one who stands out here, a player for the Boston Americans in the American League, whose club was known in newspapers of the day as the "Bosox." The image dates to about 1912, the season Boston went on to win the World Series over the New York Giants. It is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its cropped, quick portrait style reflects how such pictures were produced for daily print.
