Few pitchers have had a season like the one Joe Wood put together in 1912, when he won 34 games for Boston and earned the nickname "Smoky" for his fastball. This glass negative from the Bain News Service, one of the earliest press photo agencies, captures him at the height of that run. The team went on to beat the New York Giants in the World Series that fall, and Bain's pictures of players like Wood circulated widely in newspapers of the day. Wood later played the outfield as well, but in 1912 he was the story on the mound.
