Smoky Joe Wood, the Boston American League pitcher, is the subject of this glass negative, and in 1912 he won 34 games for the Red Sox, one of the strongest seasons by a pitcher of that era. His nickname came from a fastball that batters struggled to see. Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency, made many pictures of ballplayers during this period, and its glass negatives record how the sport was presented to newspaper readers. The 1912 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
