Pitcher Smoky Joe Wood appears here in a Boston American League uniform, the team then nicknamed the Bosox and now known as the Red Sox. Wood was one of the club's best arms in the early 1910s, and he won 34 games in 1912 while the team took the American League pennant and the World Series that year. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its 1913 date comes from later research by baseball historians, so it is an informed estimate rather than a date recorded at the time.
