This portrait shows Chester "Pinch" Thomas, a pitcher for the Boston American League club, which was still widely called the Boston Americans in 1913 and only later became known as the Red Sox. The image survives as a small glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Because the original caption cards are brief, the 1913 date and the player's identification were later confirmed by baseball historians at the Society for American Baseball Research. The picture is a useful record of how team photographs and player portraits were made and distributed during the deadball era.
