Thomas "Buck" O'Brien, a right-handed pitcher, appears here in uniform as a member of the Boston American League club, which the record dates to about 1912. Buck O'Brien pitched for Boston during the years when the team, then known as the Americans, was building the roster that would win the World Series that fall. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs that the Bain News Service distributed to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and the glass plate format shows how such pictures were made for quick reproduction. Its caption identifies him only as "Obrien, Boston," so the fuller name comes from later baseball research.
