Catcher Hick Cady is shown winning a foot race at Fenway Park, with Red Sox trainer Jack O'Brien and pitcher Buck O'Brien among the competitors. Fenway had opened only that spring, in April 1912, and the Red Sox went on to win the World Series that autumn. Informal races like this one were a common diversion for players during the season, and the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, documented many such moments for newspaper use. The date of September 25, 1912 comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee.
