Hick Cady, a catcher for the Boston Red Sox of the American League, is shown at Fenway Park, the team's home ground in Boston. Fenway opened in 1912, the same year this glass negative is dated, so the picture captures the ballpark in its first season. Cady was a backstop with a reputation for steady handling of pitchers, and the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, made portraits like this one for quick publication. Its glass plates from this period are valued today as a record of early twentieth-century baseball.
