Catcher Hick Cady, who played for the Boston American League club, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits the Bain News Service produced for newspaper use in the early 1910s. The agency's glass plates were a common format before film took over, and the title and 1912 date come from later research by baseball historians rather than from the original caption. Bain's photographs circulated to papers for illustrating game coverage and player news, so a portrait like this one shows how the press presented ballplayers of the period.
