Jake Stahl appears here as a member of the Boston American League club, which was still known as the Americans in 1908, before the Red Sox nickname became common. Stahl was a first baseman who spent most of his playing career in Boston and later managed the team to the 1912 World Series title. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs, and its glass negative reflects the press photography of the early 1900s. The 1908 date comes from research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee, so it is best read as a well-supported estimate.
