This glass negative shows Thomas J. "Buck" O'Brien, a right-handed pitcher for the Boston American League club, which the record identifies as the team he played for around 1913. O'Brien was part of a Red Sox staff that had won the World Series in 1912, the year Fenway Park opened. The Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency, sent images like this one to newspapers across the country, so the picture reflects how baseball stars were circulated to readers far from Boston. Because the date and title come from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, the exact year is approximate.
