Caught mid-stride as he runs toward third base, Jake Stahl was the player-manager of Boston's American League club in 1912, the season the team won the World Series over the New York Giants. A former first baseman, he led the club through that championship year. The glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose caption spells his name "Staal." Action shots like this were less common than posed portraits in the early 1910s, when slow plates and long exposures made moving subjects hard to capture.
