Jake Stahl is shown here as manager of the Boston American League club, the team better known today as the Red Sox, which the Bain News Service captioned simply as "Bosox." Stahl had been a first baseman before taking over the club, and in 1912 he led Boston to the American League pennant and then to a World Series title over the New York Giants. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news-photo archive built from wire-service work in the early twentieth century. Its title and date rest on research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so they reflect later scholarship as well as the original caption.
