Catcher Les Nunamaker is the subject here, pictured with the Boston American League club, which was then known as the Boston Americans and later became the Red Sox. Nunamaker spent much of the 1910s as a backup catcher, a role that meant waiting for chances behind the regular catchers. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives capture the look of early 1910s ballplayers. The 1912 date is an estimate from later research rather than a firm caption.
