Catcher Bill Carrigan, pictured in this 1913 Bain News Service glass negative, was a Boston Red Sox fixture who took over as the club's manager that same season. A Maine native, he had caught for Boston since 1908 and went on to lead the team to World Series championships in 1915 and 1916. Bain's pictures were distributed to newspapers, so images like this one reflect the quick, practical portrait work of the period. The original caption misspells his surname as "Arrigan," a small detail worth noting for researchers.
