Few details of this portrait are recorded beyond the sitter's name, the Boston National League club, and the year, which was 1913. Bill Rariden was a catcher, a position that required the most protective gear of the era, and this glass negative shows him as a working ballplayer of that time. The Bain News Service, which made and sold news photographs to newspapers, produced thousands of such player portraits in the 1910s, and the Library of Congress holds them as part of the George Grantham Bain Collection. The dating and identification come from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so they reflect careful secondary work rather than a caption written at the time.
