Taken at the Polo Grounds in New York, this glass negative shows George "Hickory" Jackson of the Boston National League club, a Boston player photographed on the road in the Giants' home park. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied news and sports pictures to newspapers, made the negative, and its collection is among the largest surviving records of early twentieth-century American life. The date of 1913 and the identification of the player were established by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006. Pictures like this one preserve how players and ballparks looked before most fans owned cameras.
