This picture shows Art Devlin of the Boston National League club, photographed at the Polo Grounds in New York, where the Giants played. Devlin was a third baseman who had spent several seasons in New York under manager John McGraw before his time in Boston, so the setting would have been a return to a familiar ballpark. The photograph is one of the glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of sports, news, and daily life in the early 1900s. The date is bracketed in the record because it was assigned by later researchers, not recorded on the original negative.
