A glass negative of Bill McKechnie in a Boston National League uniform, catalogued as 1913, places him early in a career that would later earn him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. McKechnie was a third baseman in these years before he became one of the era's most respected managers, and his 1940 World Series title with the Cincinnati Reds is the achievement most often associated with his name. The Bain News Service, a New York wire-photo agency, produced negatives like this one for newspapers that wanted quick portraits of players, so the picture reflects how the sporting press documented the game in the early 1900s. The 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than from the original caption.
