Jake Stahl, who managed the Boston American League club in 1912, appears in this glass negative from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events. Stahl had played first base for Boston before taking over as manager, and that season the club won the American League pennant and went on to defeat the New York Giants in the World Series. The Bain collection at the Library of Congress preserves many portraits of players and managers from this period. The 1912 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
