Duffy Lewis, the Boston Red Sox left fielder, is the subject of this 1912 glass negative, a portrait that captures him in his team's home-town years, when the club was making its first run toward a World Series title. Lewis played alongside Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper in Boston's outfield, a trio often remembered for their defense at Fenway Park, which opened that same year. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service, which supplied pictures of sports and city life to newspapers across the country.
