Four players from the two teams in the 1915 World Series, the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies (then called the Phillies in the National League), are posed together on the date recorded here, October 11, 1915. The caption card identifies outfielders Duffy Lewis and Harry Hooper of Boston, pitcher Dutch Leonard, catcher Ed Burns and outfielder Gavvy Cravath of Philadelphia. Boston won that Series in five games, and Lewis and Hooper were known for their work in the Red Sox outfield alongside Tris Speaker. The George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds this print, is a large body of news photographs from the period, so pictures like this one were often made for quick newspaper use.
