Harry Hooper, shown here in his Boston American League uniform, was a longtime outfielder for the Red Sox. The negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers, and its glass plates now form the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The 1912 date matches the season Boston won the World Series over the New York Giants, and Hooper played in that championship. Glass negatives of this size were working tools for press photographers, so the portrait also shows how quickly sports images moved into print in that era.
