Tris Speaker, the Red Sox center fielder, is the subject of this 1912 glass negative, which was made in late September during the season Boston went on to win the American League pennant and the World Series over the New York Giants. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers, produced the image, and its plates now form part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The date and caption come from the agency's own cards, which makes the picture a useful record of how the press covered the team that fall.
