Tris Speaker, the Boston Americans' center fielder, is the subject of this 1911 glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to papers across the country. In 1911 the team still played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, two seasons before Fenway Park opened, and Speaker was becoming known for his range and his aggressive positioning in the outfield. The date and title come from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so the exact timing is an informed estimate. The small glass plate format was standard for newspaper work of the period, when quick portraits of players could run beside game coverage the next day.
