Dave Shean is shown at bat in this Boston National League image, one of the player studies the Bain News Service produced for newspaper use in the early 1910s. Shean was an infielder, and the Boston club of that era, then called the Doves, was among the weakest teams in the league. The date of 1910 comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than from the negative itself, so it is best read as a well-supported estimate. Bain's glass negatives give a clear view of how ballplayers were photographed before action shots became routine.
