Grayling, the seat of Crawford County, sat on the Au Sable River in northern Michigan in 1921, a town shaped by the lumber industry that had cleared much of the region's white pine in the decades before. By the early 1920s the sawmills were fewer, and the cutover land was being considered for farming, while anglers from across the Midwest already came for the Au Sable's trout. Camp Grayling, established in 1917 as a military training ground, had brought soldiers and business to town during the First World War and remained part of local life afterward. Residents would have known Grayling as a river town whose economy was slowly shifting from timber toward resort trade and small farms.
