Lawyer and former congressman William S. Groesbeck of Cincinnati appears here as a wood engraving made from a photograph by Brady & Co., the studio associated with Mathew Brady. The portrait ran in *Harper's Weekly* on April 25, 1868, on page 260, while the Senate impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson was underway, and Groesbeck was one of the lawyers defending the president. Weekly illustrated papers of that era relied on engravers to turn photographs into printing blocks, so the likeness reflects both the studio's posed portrait and the engraver's hand.
