William S. Paley is the subject here, a portrait print made by the Bachrach studio, a Baltimore firm that was among the best-known American portrait photographers of the early and mid-twentieth century. Paley built CBS into a major broadcasting network, turning it from a small radio chain into a national force that shaped American radio and, later, television. The record dates the print to about 1944, a wartime period when radio was the country's central news and entertainment medium. The caption information is unverified, so the date should be read as approximate.
