Astoria, Oregon, in 1911 was a river port at the mouth of the Columbia, where salmon canneries, sawmills, and ship traffic formed the core of the local economy. Its waterfront drew cannery workers, fishermen, and sailors, many of them immigrants from Scandinavia who had settled there over the previous decades. This view is labeled as showing Nez Perce and Yakama people, whose communities had fished and traded along the Columbia for generations, so their presence here reflects how the river's salmon drew people from far inland. For most residents of the day, Astoria was known first as a fish port and a gateway to the Pacific.
