Astoria, Oregon, in 1912 was a river port at the mouth of the Columbia, where salmon canneries, sawmills and shipping shaped daily life. The town dated to a fur trading post founded in 1811, and by the 1910s it had become one of the state's busiest harbors, with vessels crossing the Columbia bar and freight moving along its waterfront. Fishing and canning drew many immigrant workers, including Scandinavian fishermen, and the population of roughly ten thousand lived between the working riverfront and the residential streets climbing the hillside. City Park, a green space on the rising ground above town, gave residents a place to gather away from the docks and mills.
