Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River, was a town built on fish, timber and shipping in 1912. Its canneries packed salmon in large numbers, and the nickname "salmon capital of the world" was a point of local pride. Sawmills and the lumber trade kept the waterfront busy, while ocean-going vessels waited on the bar and river steamers carried cargo upstream toward Portland. Houses climbed the steep hillsides above the docks, and the town's Scandinavian, Finnish and Chinese residents gave it a mix of churches and languages. The waterfront in this view was the working center of a county that depended on what moved up and down the river.
