In 1912, Hood River Valley was a fruit-growing district that still looked raw at its edges, with new orchard blocks cut out of stump land and wagons hauling boxed pears and apples down to the depot. The Mount Hood Railroad ran up the valley toward Parkdale, carrying timber and fruit, while a scenic road along the Columbia Gorge was still years from completion. Japanese American families worked as orchard laborers and some held their own land here, a presence that would be broken by forced removal during the Second World War. Summer dust, spring frost scares and the wait for packing-house crews shaped the year as much as any election or town council vote.
