Hood River Valley, Oregon, in 1912 was a farming district built largely on orchards, with apples and pears as its main crops. Growers had been planting fruit since the 1880s, and by the early 1910s the valley's Newtown Pippin apples were sold in distant markets, including Britain, which gave the district a reputation for quality fruit. Irrigation ditches fed from mountain streams made the cultivated land possible, and rail and river shipping on the Columbia carried the harvest out. Oregon voters that same year approved women's suffrage, a change that drew wide attention in farm towns like Hood River. For residents, the valley meant orchards, packing sheds, and the shared work of the fall harvest, with Mount Hood rising to the south.
