Hood River Valley in 1912 was in the middle of an orchard boom, with apples and pears planted on land that had been farmed lightly or not at all a generation earlier. The valley sits on the Columbia River's south shore in the shadow of Mount Hood, and its growers depended on the railroad to move fruit to markets east and overseas. Irrigation ditches fed from the mountain's snowmelt made the bench lands productive, and the town of Hood River had grown into the commercial center for packing houses, shipping and local supply. Hood River County had only recently been split off from Wasco County, so civic life in 1912 was still being organized around courthouse business, church and school, and the seasonal rhythm of blossom, harvest and packing.
