Crater Lake in 1912 had been a national park for about ten years, and the wider country was caught up in a presidential campaign that year, with Progressive ideas about government and public resources drawing close attention in Oregon as elsewhere. On the rim, the question of who would build and run lodging was still open, and the large hotel that would later anchor the visitor trade had not yet gone up. Most Oregonians still earned their living from timber, farms, and the Willamette Valley, while the lake drew a smaller summer crowd who came to see the water for its own sake. For people who had pressed for the park's creation, the year marked a steady test of whether a remote wonder could welcome travelers without losing its wildness.
